Pairing: Former special operations team member x a lovesick young lady (Lu Qian: trying hard to be normal, refined, highly intelligent; Tan Youning: born a princess, blessed with balanced luck, lovesick; not your typical older-woman-younger-man romance)
On Lu Qian's first day as a private security consultant, her employer, Tan Youning, greeted her with, “Hello. Would you marry me?”
Lu Qian: “Huh? What kind of Pokemon joke is this?”
Rule 10 of the Security Consultant Code of Conduct: Romantic or flirtatious relationships with clients are strictly forbidden.
Lu Qian politely joked, “Sorry, I offer my skills, not my body.”
Tan Youning gave a light cough and laughed it off. “Just kidding. Miss Lu isn't my type.”
Danger lurked around the young lady. On Lu Qian's second day on the job, rival gangs clashed; on the third, a hotel caught fire; on the fourth, a string of car accidents. A few days later, Lu Qian heard Tan Youning apologize. She replied with perfect composure, “It's fine. I have to earn the generous salary the young lady pays me.”
The security consultant was unfailingly polite and never overstepped. Tan Youning looked at her for a moment, then turned away.
It took Lu Qian a while to realize she'd offended her outspoken, fussy, and temperamental employer. She served the young lady by holding her umbrella, carrying her bags, tasting her food, checking the bathwater, lifting her skirt hem, and pouring her champagne. She even went out in a storm to buy food from a shop that had already closed. She did as she was told, without complaint.
The woman was famous for being imperious, but after a party she leaned drunkenly against Lu Qian, her pretty fingers hooking into the boutonniere loop on Lu Qian's suit jacket. Her breath was sweet as she taunted her, “My security consultant, are you always this good-natured?”
Lu Qian remained perfectly polite. “It's only right to fulfill my duties.”
Tan Youning said, “Then according to the code of conduct, you've crossed a line.” What kind of security consultant kisses her employer like that?
Lu Qian only smiled. “Whatever my employer needs, Lu Qian provides. I'm here to serve you.”
Lu Qian discovered that her employer was curious about everything and loved to provoke people. She was also Defiant. As it happened, Lu Qian was much the same, with a touch of occupational perfectionism. She liked to do everything just right.
Sometimes her employer called her a refined hypocrite, a secret flirt, and an infuriating woman. Lu Qian took it all in stride, then smiled and kissed her employer's pretty earlobe. “I only want to do a good enough job. After all, my employer has always been particular about the details.”
Tan Youning criticized her. “If you want to do a good enough job, you should learn to behave.”
Lu Qian protested, “I'm not obedient enough because I like you too much.”
They both froze for a moment. The conversation went no further.
Lu Qian knew this was a short-term exchange of favors, not something real.
But her employer had a wonderful appreciation for life's little pleasures. She would put the wildflowers Lu Qian brought home in a pottery vase she'd made herself. She grew clingier by the day, asking for hugs and arms around her waist, asking when Lu Qian would be back whenever she went out, and waiting for her to come home for dinner. Her employer had a face like a painting, a slender waist and long legs, and sweet lips.
Lu Qian gradually began to imagine she was in love, until she saw Tan Youning's royal betrothal contract and realized that, to her employer, she had only ever been a temporary choice. Times had changed, and it was time to move on.
Looking back, Lu Qian had had a pretty good time, and Tan Youning had achieved what she wanted. They were even. Lu Qian packed up and left briskly. The clamor, splendor, and glittering wedding of the wealthy had nothing to do with her.
Six months later, when someone at a bar asked what kind of woman she liked, Lu Qian still thought of her employer's soft lips, subtle fragrance, and stubborn refusal to back down during an argument. She smiled. “I like sweet, obedient women.” Then she thought about it and added, “Not too pretty, and no one with a bad temper.”
Her friends all laughed. “Looks like someone broke your heart.”
Lu Qian walked out of the bar alongside a big group of new friends. In her neat, refined white shirt, she got asked for her contact information every few steps. She was easygoing and accepted all the requests, until someone with a familiar fragrance sent her a friend request.
“Hello. Would you marry me? ... I'll be good.”
