The original prince of the East Palace died of unknown reasons. The first two princes and the first five princes fought for power. Emperor Xia Wen was seriously ill. King Li of Yanzhou returned to Beijing forcefully. A war broke out among the three parties. Three years later, King Yan succeeded to the throne and promised his father that he would never fight fratricide. Emperor Xia Wen died. The first two princes were imprisoned in the Black Tower of Kyoto. The first five princes became a monk at Tianlian Temple.
After King Yan succeeded to the throne, he changed his reign to Xinyuan, granted great titles to meritorious ministers, and punished the guilty.
A few years after the new emperor ascends the throne, there will be another power struggle among the princes.
