[Chapter One Complete] She was the first successful product of the “Guanyin Bestows a Child” program. From the moment she was born, the whole Sun City adored her. But when her genetic report came back marked “F Grade,” she became a piece of trash. Her infant body was stuffed into a tiny metal box, then tipped into the “Beast Realm” along with a garbage truckload of refuse, where she awaited incineration. It was Grandpa who found her in the trash and brought her underground. Above ground, she had to make herself into a perfect human. Underground, she had to disguise herself as something other than human. After all, in this forsaken place, humans were the lowest of the low, reduced to food. They were monsters, trash. The moment they were made, they were forced into the Beast Realm alongside humans with inferior genes. A fresh piece of trash hit the ground with a thud. When Chen Wangshu opened her eyes again, she saw the underground furnace’s sun. The third word children here learned, after “Mom” and “Dad,” was “sun.” The beasts underground gazed up at the sun as if on a pilgrimage, but Chen Wangshu knew it was only a fireball produced by burning garbage. It didn’t deserve to be called a sun. “Shh.” Grandpa said, “Put on your mechanical ears, hide your tail, and don’t pick fights with the other beasts. If you don’t want to die, you’d better learn how to be a cat.” Unfortunately, Chen Wangshu wasn’t a cat. She was human: cunning, clever, and skilled at disguise. She carried a gun assembled from garbage and emerged from a mountain of corpses and a sea of fire. Then a beast of Zhurong handed her a syringe. “Join us. We can help you achieve genetic evolution.” “What do I have to do to turn from a human into a beast?” “Start by learning to be selfish.” Reader’s Guide: 1. Broadly speaking, this is a work of science fiction with a certain degree of absurdism. Please decide during the preview whether it suits your tastes. The deliberately stilted translation-like prose may not be for everyone. 2. This is not a female powerhouse story, nor is it centered on an invincible heroine. Every character gets plenty of page time, and every character has obvious personality flaws (including Chen Wangshu). This isn’t a wish-fulfillment story and won’t give readers a dopamine rush. It contains plenty of angst, setbacks, unresolved regrets, and culture shock. I much prefer putting my characters through the wringer to writing lighthearted, everyday comedy. 3. At first, Chen Wangshu and Qin are just online acquaintances and friends. Qin doesn’t appear much in the early chapters, but will show up more in the middle and later parts. For now, Chen Wangshu and Qin’s relationship seems to be shifting toward a close-friendship ship. Once again, this is a story about two people saving each other, with huge mutual feelings. I love that. 4. The ending will be happy or open, depending on whether Chen Wangshu can find the optimal solution. Even in a novel, I can’t write a perfect, harmonious happy ending where the characters get everything they want at the push of a button, ascend to godhood, and save the world. Some people say the author is the creator, so they can write whatever they want. Bullshit. I’m no creator, just a useless camera. A camera can only record. Don’t expect me to help them. 5. This novel has a lot of potential triggers, far too many to list one by one. I don’t recommend it to readers with triggers. Rather than forcing yourself to keep reading while worrying that something unbearable might happen, it’s better to give up from the start. Knowing when to give up is a fine virtue. Also, please don’t offer unsolicited writing advice. 6. Update frequency depends on the rankings. 7. A book that can go on for a long time. 8.
