The taciturn boy who was always first in grade always drew butterflies in his biology textbook. She gave him a copy of "Gender Queer" in exchange for a stack of paintings soaked in depression: nailed-through butterfly wings, a cocoon covered with bandages, and a boy in a skirt in a glass cage.
They used drawing paper to talk and painted the illusion of blue butterflies fluttering in the abandoned greenhouse.
Until the night of the graduation ceremony, Shen Zhao fell from the rooftop wearing a blood-stained chiffon skirt. There was only one Leslie Cheung lyric in his suicide note: "Spring should be great, if you were still here."
Ten years later, Lin Xia's painting exhibition "Broken Cocoon" caused a sensation across the Internet.
