The novel was written from the end of the Yuan Dynasty to the beginning of the Ming Dynasty ("Cunei") and ended in the forty-fourth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty ("Youbang"), which lasted about 248 years. The main text begins with the second chapter, which takes place in the late Chenghua years of the Ming Dynasty, about one hundred and twenty years from "Chun"; it ends with the fifty-fifth chapter, the story of "Four Guests", which happened in the twenty-third year of Wanli, and the bottom is twenty-one years from "Youbang". It has experienced the rise and fall of a dynasty.
At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Wang Mian, a farmer's son from Zhuji, Zhejiang, became a self-taught scholar. Because he did not want to be associated with the county magistrate Shiren and the gentry, he avoided Jinan, Shandong and sold paintings to make a living. Half a year later, the Yellow River burst its banks and the people were displaced. Wang Miannai returned to his hometown. Soon, my mother died of illness. Another year passed, and the world was in chaos. The king of Wu, who was very interested in the treasures of the country, went to visit Wang Mian and asked him for advice on how to bring peace to the world.
A few years later, when King Wu founded the Ming Dynasty, the Ministry of Rites decided to use the Four Books, the Five Classics, and the Eight-Part Essay to select scholars. From this, Wang Mian foresaw that "a generation of literati would be in trouble" and promptly took refuge in the Kuaiji Mountains.
In the last years of Chenghua, a school was established in Guanyin Temple in Xuejiaji, Wenshang County, Yanzhou, Shandong Province. Mr. Xia recommended Zhou Jin to teach the school. Zhou Jin was an old boy. He was ridiculed by the scholar Mei Jiu and looked down upon by Wang Hui, an elite scholar. He felt infinitely humiliated. A year later, the venue was lost again, and I was filled with resentment. When I went to the provincial capital with my sister-in-law Jin Youyu to keep accounts for merchants, I went to visit the Gongyuan [23]. When I saw the number board, I was so resentful that I threw my head away and fell unconscious. Later, he received financial support from a businessman and donated money to serve as a prisoner to take the examination. He was successively awarded the title of Juren and Jinshi, became the imperial censor, and was selected to study Taoism in Guangdong. When he was presiding over the examination of boy students in Nanhai and Panyu counties, he recognized the 54-year-old boy student Fan and entered the school.
