The novel "Red Rain and Spring Miao" parodies the two movies "Red Rain" and "Spring Miao" released in 1975. The novel describes a series of interesting stories and profound questions that arise when Hong Yu, a sixteen-year-old barefoot doctor, faces various adult topics as he grows up.
He has to face the reality that rural ghosts and witch doctors compete with modern medical treatment for the masses. He is required to examine a bride who bleeds on her wedding night. He has to avoid performing heart and lung auscultation on a female educated youth to arouse his love. He has to face the disdainful eyes of many patients who dislike him for being young and unable to treat diseases. He has to accept the professional attacks of old Chinese doctors. He has to face the unfair dismissal, investigation and criticism of him by the party branch of the brigade. Especially, he has to face the test of the relationship between men and women in the adult world. He publicly exposed a major conspiracy of the old Chinese medicine doctor, so his life went from being valued by the leaders, to being dismissed and imprisoned many times, and finally being squeezed into the position of veterinarian. The most ironic thing is that he saved many lives as a barefoot doctor, and the rescue process was very touching, but he was ostracized and punished because of the pressure of the old doctors; and after he became a veterinarian, because of his legendary experience and superb skills, he was supported by members near and far and became a model worker in the county.
The novel generally takes realism as the main line, takes the form of a Bildungsroman, and uses modernist and postmodernist narrative techniques such as intertextuality, irony, metafiction, metaphor, symbolism, stream of consciousness, dialogue, and existentialism, making the novel both readable, ideological, interesting, and literary.
