A novel intertwined with court intrigue and love, it tells the story of how the heroine Ye Ling became the concubine of the crown prince Zuo Hanchen despite her status as a concubine in the general's palace, and the complicated emotional entanglement between her and the fourth prince Li Ye. Ye Ling was originally Li Ye's chess piece and was placed next to the prince, but as the story develops, she gradually discovers her deep love for the prince, and feels deep regret and pain when the prince encounters betrayal and death.
The novel unfolds from Ye Ling's perspective, delicately describing her inner world and every detail of her palace life. From her initial sense of mission to Prince Zuo Hanchen, to her later affectionate dependence, and finally to her regret and pain, her emotions changed richly and truly. As Ye Ling's childhood sweetheart, Li Ye's ambition and desire for power, as well as his use of Ye Ling, constitute the main conflict of the story.
In the climax of the story, Prince Zuo Hanchen was betrayed because of the defense plan that Ye Ling inadvertently leaked, and was imprisoned and tortured. After Ye Ling learned the truth, she was heartbroken, and her love and regret for the prince reached its peak. However, when she wanted to confess her feelings to the prince, she was interrupted by a sudden coup. The prince finally passed away in Ye Ling's arms, leaving her with only endless regret and the loving "Letter to Release His Wife".
