Updated daily. A cheerful childhood-friends short story, happy ending.
Tough on the outside, soft on the inside x shamelessly persistent
Lin Xia x Chen Xijing
At twenty-eight, she returns to the small town where she grew up, moves into her grandmother's old house, and uncovers a secret her childhood friend has kept buried for years.
You said friendship matters most, so I'll just be your friend.
Bonus scene:
The summer heat is fierce, but the air-conditioning inside is turned up high.
The eerie green glow of the screen illuminates Chen Xijing's stunned face. He sets down the spoon he was using to scoop out watermelon, then yelps when a ghost jumps out at him.
Lin Xia thinks he's a weirdo: terrible at horror movies, but still obsessed with them. Every evening, he sits there clutching a can of cola and watching ghost stories, and every time, she ends up being the one who has to turn off the living-room lights.
It's her thirtieth day back on the island. Her grandmother rented the old house to her childhood friend Chen Xijing, so the two of them were forced into life as roommates under one roof.
“Cola kills your sperm.”
“That's fine. I'm not getting married or having kids.”
“Horror movies are scary.”
“No big deal. I haven't died of fright yet.”
Fine, then. Let's watch together. Lin Xia digs out her favorite movies, hoping to scare her childhood friend to death and inherit the watermelon and soda in his fridge.
The movies aren't scary. Having a roommate who yelps every time he sees a ghost is the real horror. Lin Xia picks at her ear, trying to check whether her eardrum is still there.
She swears that if she ever watches a horror movie with Chen Xijing again, she's a dog.
Woof!
