A long time ago, there was a gentleman named Jack Gilbert [Jack Gilbert (1925-2012), a contemporary American poet, author of five collections of poems including "The Fire", "Rejection of Paradise", and "The Unique Dance". He has won many poetry awards including the Yale Young Poets Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. ], I deeply regret that I have never met him.
Jack Gilbert is an outstanding poet. If you've never heard of him, that's okay. It's not your fault, he never cared about the reputation. But I got to know him and fell in love with him like a mountain. Now, let me tell my story about him.
Jack Gilbert was born in Pittsburgh in 1925 and grew up with the smog, noise and industry of that city. As a youth he worked in factories and steel plants, but despite this he was early called a poet and accepted the title unequivocally. Like some people who become religious, he became a poet out of a practice of piety, an act of love, a lifelong commitment to the search for grace and transcendence. I think that could be a great way to be a poet, or any other possible being, really, when you listen to your inner calling and let it guide your life.
