"The Peacock Flying Southeast" is a long narrative poem in the Yuefu folk songs of the Han Dynasty. It is the peak work in the history of the development of Yuefu poetry. Later generations praised it and the Northern Dynasty's "Mulan Poetry" as "the two masterpieces of Yuefu". It was originally titled "An Ancient Poetry Written by Jiao Zhongqing's Wife". It was also named because the first line of the poem is "The peacock flies southeast".
Purpose: It expresses the strong desire of the people to pursue freedom of love and a happy life.
