The story of "Lin Lanxiang" takes place in Beijing, the capital of the Ming Dynasty. The novel was written from the first year of Hongxi (1425) to the eighth year of Jiajing (1529), spanning more than a hundred years during the Eight Dynasties. The work centers on the rise and fall of the father and son generations of the aristocratic Geng Lang family, with the daily life and conflicts and entanglements of the Geng family as the main plot line. It also covers major historical events such as the replacement of emperors, the struggle between loyalists and traitors, local rebellions, invasions by foreign enemies, and palace riots.
