The Southern Dynasties were inherited from the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Counting from Liu Yu's generation to the Jin Dynasty, there were the Southern Qi, Southern Liang, Southern Dynasty Chen, and the Southern Song Dynasty all had Jiankang (Nanjing, Jiangsu) as their capital. The Northern Dynasties were inherited from the Sixteen Kingdoms.
