A pair of lovers in the Republic of China fell in love while studying in France, but later they were forced to come back because of the war and their mother's serious illness. One accepted the arrangement of his family to marry and have children, and the other had to leave the mainland because his family was a warlord. So the last two people did not see each other for forty years, so at the end of the story, one of them has a family full of children and grandchildren, and the other never married.
