Shanxi is surrounded by mountains and is known as the backbone of North China. It is adjacent to the three provinces of Hebei, Chashu and Suizhou in the northeast along the Great Wall, and is bounded by Henan and Shaanxi across the Yellow River in the southwest. The provincial capital, Taiyuan, is located in Tongpu, where the Zhengtai Railway intersects. On the left bank of the Fen River, surrounded by mountains and rivers, it has been an important military town since ancient times. The Japanese army attacked from Yanmen Pass, Pingxing Pass, Zijing Pass, Niangzi Pass and other passes. Then the Shanxi-Sui Army, the Eighth Route Army, the Kuomintang and other armies launched blockades at each pass.
