This novel narrates the love story between Li Shimin's third prince Li Ke and his sister Princess Gaoyang during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, as well as the same-sex relationship between the prince Li Chengqian and the eunuch Zhengzhi. The author describes these two unethical love affairs while showing the style of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.
