Nalan Xingde (1655──1685), whose original name was Chengde, was changed to Xingde to avoid the taboo of Prince Baocheng; his courtesy name was Rongruo, and his nickname was from Lengya Mountain. A Manchurian from Zhenghuang Banner, the eldest son of the great scholar Mingzhu, grew up in Beijing. He was eager to learn when he was young, and he had a thorough knowledge of all the classics and history. He was familiar with traditional academic culture, and he was especially good at writing lyrics. In the fifteenth year of Kangxi's reign (1676), he became a Jinshi and was awarded the third-class bodyguard of the Qianqing clan, and later moved to the first-class bodyguard. The retinue patrolled the north and south, and once sent an envoy to Suolong (Heilongjiang River Basin) to inspect Tsarist Russia's intrusion into the Northeast. In the 24th year of Kangxi's reign, he died of a sudden illness at the age of thirty-one.
