The condition was first discovered in 1966 and named Diogenes syndrome by Clark et al. The name comes from Diogenes of Sinope, an ancient Greek philosopher, cynic and minimalist who allegedly lived in a large jar in Athens. Not only does he not hoard, but he seeks human companionship by venturing daily to the marketplace.
Although the term "Diogenes" was coined by A. N. G. Clarke and others, the origin of the syndrome is unknown. In the mid-1970s and has been in common use ever since. Diogenes syndrome is considered a media phenomenon more prominent in the popular media than in the medical literature.
