At the end of August, the weather was hot and humid. The intense heat drove swarms of mosquitoes out of the mountains and forests. Within a few days, people in the village no longer greeted each other when they met. Instead, they lifted up their coarse cloth skirts and exposed to each other the red rashes on their abdomens. While cursing their parents and ancestors, they secretly compared whether they were less favored by flying mosquitoes than others.
The people who couldn't bear the torture finally put on their bamboo hats after tossing and turning for several nights. Holding a sickle, follow the rugged path to the stream to harvest mugwort. Since that early morning, countless green and yellow smoke pillars have risen from the bottom of the valley, illuminating the mosquitoes swirling like clouds. The smell of mugwort is permeating the village.
