Late at night.
Luo Yan had argued with her ex-boyfriend, who had come begging to get back together, until midnight. Thirsty and exhausted, she was lying on the bed at the guesthouse when she suddenly remembered she’d left her camera in the courtyard.
She opened the door and was surprised to find someone reading in a wicker chair.
The floor lamp softened his sharp, stern features. Luo Yan’s gaze lingered on him for a few seconds before she realized it.
It was Ci Ye, a high school classmate she’d run into on the way to Xining.
By chance, they had booked rooms in the same courtyard guesthouse. They had separate rooms but shared the living room and garden with two other groups.
The man looked up at her.
Luo Yan spoke calmly, her voice still carrying the weariness that hadn’t faded. “I left my camera here. I came to get it.”
He picked up the camera from the table and handed it to her without a word, his gaze still fixed on her face.
Luo Yan took it and asked casually, out of politeness, “Why are you still up so late?”
The man leaned back in the wicker chair. A moment later, the corner of his mouth moved slightly. “Looks like you’ve forgotten.”
Luo Yan froze.
“When have I ever been an early sleeper?”
-
As a girl, Luo Yan had instinctively disliked boys who seemed born with a halo, adored by everyone around them. She and Ci Ye had been classmates for three years and deskmates for one, but their interactions had been few and far between.
She never expected to spend one reckless night with him.
In front of the mirror, Luo Yan slowly covered the marks on her collarbone.
Ci Ye didn’t look like a man who abstained from worldly pleasures, and he certainly wasn’t the sort to fall in love at first sight with a high school classmate he hadn’t seen in years, especially one things had ended badly with.
Good.
She hadn’t planned to take it seriously, either.
-
Ci Ye had done plenty of rebellious things over the years.
He slept in class and skipped school to go to internet cafes. In high school, he rejected his family’s plans for him to study abroad. After graduating from university, he left behind a comfortable life in Beijing and ran off to face the windswept deserts of the northwest.
The one time he ever followed the rules was when it came to Luo Yan.
Knowing she didn’t like him, he hid the burning feelings in his heart and kept himself in check for a full ten years.

Please add my upcoming novel 《Warning: It’s So Good (Marriage First, Love Later)》 to your reading list:
When her family business ran into trouble, Lin Xitang went to her boyfriend, Ye Wenxu, hoping he would help her out.
Only when he threw her out did she learn that he had gotten together with her in the first place because she was the Lin family’s only daughter, and he wanted to marry into the family and live off its wealth.
At her lowest point, Xu Sicheng, the neighbor she’d hated as a child, her high school nemesis, and the man who still traded barbs with her whenever they met as adults, tossed a contract her way.
“Think about it. Marry me.”
Lin Xitang looked at him without changing her expression. “If you dare to have a crush on me, you’re dead.”
Xu Sicheng gave a cold laugh.
“Don’t flatter yourself, little princess. I just think life would be boring without someone around to cause trouble. You don’t need to worry about that.”
Lin Xitang only wanted to use him, so she gritted her teeth and signed the contract.
-
Later, she tried to divorce Xu Sicheng.
“Give me a reason.” He had just come out of the bathroom and hadn’t even tied his bathrobe yet. Leaning against the doorway, he spoke in a lazy tone.
“We’re not right for each other.”
Xu Sicheng suddenly smiled. “Is that so?”
He stepped forward, wrapped an arm around her waist, and gently pulled her into his arms. He lowered his head to her ear.
“Last night in bed, you didn’t say that. Maybe I need to help you remember.”
She had said
“Xu Sicheng is the worst.”
“I-I was wrong. Xu Sicheng is the best.”
