The so-called legends refer to the short stories created by literati in the Tang Dynasty, and their content is mainly about describing anecdotes and strange events. Compared with the myths of the Pre-Qin Dynasty and the Legends and Monsters of the Six Dynasties, Tang legends appeared for the first time as conscious artistic fictions. Since then, ancient novels have truly matured as a literary genre. In the late Tang Dynasty, Pei Kai took "Legend" as the title of his collection of novels. After the Song Dynasty, people based on the characteristics of such novels to write anecdotes and strange events, which are generally called legends of the Tang and Song Dynasties.
