Rhododendron grows in mountainous shrubs or pine forests at an altitude of 500-1200 (-2500) meters. It is a typical acidic soil indicator plant in central and southwestern China.
It is native to East Asia and grows at altitudes of 500-2700 meters above sea level. Wild species are found in China, Japan, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
