Once upon a time, there was a witch. She decided that using magic to deliver letters was too much trouble, so she sought out the owl. "Can you deliver the letter for me?" She asked.
"Yes," said the owl, "but you must give me something in exchange."
"What is it?" Asked the witch.
"Anything," said the Owl, "preferably a mouse."
The witch looked a little embarrassed - she hated mice more than anything. After thinking about it, she said, "How about being my assistant? I will teach you a lot of magic."
Owl agreed.
So, the owl became the witch's assistant, and of course the student. The wizard teaches the owl magic. To the wizard's surprise, the owl has an ability that is impossible for a wizard - to travel between the worlds of the living and the dead. After its death, this ability is passed on to its descendants.
Later, many wizards used owls to deliver messages like this witch, but of course, they did not "ridiculously accept owls as disciples." This is the origin of the relationship between owls and wizards.
