Vanity, one meaning is "illusion, meaninglessness", the other meaning is "conceit, vanity". Life is illusory, and the reason why people live in vain is just because of self-confidence and vanity - we believe that we are different from others, believe that our lives will be valuable, and are greedy for pleasure and vanity.
