Lingjun, like all Taoist priests, strives to ascend to immortality, and is willing to sacrifice all the desires and fetters that only mortals have for it.
The Emperor of Heaven appreciated his talent and character and gave him an elixir of the Queen Mother of the West. As long as he accumulated another hundred years of good deeds, he would be able to survive the thunder tribulation and rank among the immortals.
However, on the day of the thunder tribulation, he accidentally killed a mortal who broke in, and was seen by the immortals. He took away the elixir in public and was humiliated in front of everyone.
All the pride and confidence he had gained since possessing the elixir given by the Emperor of Heaven was shattered into rubble on the ground. Lingjun knelt on the ground, his palms and knees pricked with blood.
The mortal who broke in took the wooden sign he gave to Gu Wuyou, the person he had taken care of for ten years, and then broke in through the outer magic circle.
Lingjun vented all his resentment on the unknowing Gu Wuyou. They had been together day and night for ten years. Now that they met again, Lingjun slapped him and severed ties with him.
Lingjun returned to his master's Taoist temple, and was beaten by the angry master. Dragging his injuries, he went to look for slim opportunities in the distance, hoping to meet the immortal family again who would tolerate his murderous crimes.
At the temple where the Immortal Family Association appears, Lingjun saves Gu Wuyou from being knifed by a bandit, and meets the immortal he is looking for with Gu Wuyou.
The god said that Gu Wuyou was talented and intelligent, and personally gave Gu Wuyou an elixir to ensure that he would ascend to immortality within thirty years.
