Rumor has it that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva accepted the great trust of Buddha Sakyamuni before his Nirvana, took it as his own duty to save all sentient beings, and made various oaths.
Ksitigarbha escaped into the endless hell and burned his body in flames, never to see the light of day again. He once looked back at the world.
The Bodhisattva made a nine-character motto:
"If I don't go to hell, who will?"
