Copywriting:
A'tan worked as a maid in the Hou Mansion for three years and saved enough money to redeem herself.
On the night of her escape, she squatted on the wall while waiting for the night watch, thinking that the ferry was thirty miles to the south, and her cousin would be doing laundry there, so she could always be introduced to her.
The light from the torch illuminated her face.
He was riding on a horse, and he used his riding crop to push away the dead vines on the wall. He looked up at her and said, "You are very courageous."
Ah Tan gritted his teeth and lowered himself from the wall, knocking his knees on the bluestone. He didn't dismount, and the riding crop lifted her chin.
"I allow you to redeem yourself," he said, "but I don't allow you to leave me."
Ah Tan later realized that that was not the way back to the Hou Mansion.
She was thrown into a remote courtyard. The door of the courtyard was locked, and only a mute old woman brought her meals every day. Occasionally, his voice could be heard outside the wall. He was accompanying another woman to admire flowers and draw eyebrows.
"He's just a runaway slave," she heard him say. "He may as well be beaten to death."
Ah Tan tightened his grip on the broom and slowly loosened it.
Until that rainy night, smelling of alcohol, he knocked open the woodshed door, pressed her into the haystack, and bit her earlobe until it bled.
"If you want to escape, I will break your legs."
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, and the small patch of skin next to hers was surprisingly hot.
The rain outside the window is still falling.
Ah Tan raised the sharpened bamboo tip and stabbed it into his heart, "Then go to hell."
Two years later.
Ah Tan was sitting in the shop making medicinal tea for customers when she heard someone shouting from outside: "Ms. Shen, someone is looking for her."
She didn't look up, her fingers continued to press the folded corners of the yellow paper.
"Said he came from the north."
She raised her eyes.
There was a person standing in the light at the door with a faint smile, "Ms. Shen, I'm here to break your legs."
