There is a type of person whose purpose of existence is to set off the protagonist.
Their stupidity and viciousness bring out the protagonist's wit and kindness;
Their mediocre talents bring out the protagonist's excellent talents;
Their narrow-mindedness and stinginess bring out the broad-mindedness of the protagonist.
All in all, in the author's writing, they are either the stepping stones for the protagonist, or the green leaves that line the flowers.
But what happens when the supporting character encounters a rebellious system?
"The halo of the protagonist? How can it be special? I want the supporting characters to have their own halo!"
"Who says the supporting characters are not as good as the protagonists? I want my supporting characters to be better than the protagonists!"
"Who says supporting characters are all negative examples? I want the protagonist to be a negative example for once!"
