They all grew up later.
Xu Yunbao's heart surgery was successful. Xu Wanquan was admitted to college, danced for many years, and later opened his own dance studio.
At the age of thirty, Xu Yunbao moved back to the county where they grew up together. She opened a small flower shop on the corner of the street, and planted an osmanthus tree in front of the shop.
Xu Wanquan's studio is opposite.
Every evening, Xu Yunbao would cross the street and stand outside the glass door of the studio to watch the girls dancing inside. Sometimes Xu Wanquan is teaching, and sometimes he is just practicing slowly in front of the mirror.
After class was over, they went to have dinner together, sometimes talking, sometimes not.
After dinner, we walked slowly home along the newly built cement road. They had walked that road countless times together when they were children - it was a loess road with lots of potholes, and they would fall if they walked too fast.
The road is smooth now.
When passing the old osmanthus tree, Xu Yunbao would stop and stand for a while. It was the tree they had climbed together when they were children. They had dried sweet-scented osmanthus under the tree together, and they had written the letter "Let's dry sweet-scented osmanthus together next time."
The tree is still there, older than them all, and has outlived them all.
Xu Yunbao said: Look, it's still open.
Xu Wanquan said: Well, it opens every year.
Xu Yunbao said: So do we.
This is a story about two girls, from the age of four to thirty, from the countryside to the county town to the provincial capital and back again.
They dried sweet-scented osmanthus together, saved chocolates together, and asked on the phone late at night, "Will we still be like this in the future?"
Later they all had their answers.
Later they discovered that some people really will always be there.
