There is a definition in astronomy called the Roche limit.
"Planets and satellites will continue to approach due to gravity, but there is a safe minimum distance between them. Once the Roche limit is exceeded, the tidal force will tear the satellite into pieces. Then the shattered and collapsed planet will turn into stardust, gradually gathering around the planet, evolving into a ring, surrounding the planet."
