Gu Liangxi and Wu Nian were originally fraternal playmates in a small mountain village. An accident when they were young led the two to Chang'an one after another. Gu Liangxi chose to make a living by singing ditties, and was deeply loved by Qin Lantai, the adopted son of a certain minister. Wu Nian was employed as a county official in Wannian County, and was favored by Chen Niangqiu, the daughter of the county captain.
