The story takes place in Xiaoli Village on the banks of the Guo River in Luyi, eastern Henan, in the early days of the Republic of China. Chen Shanwu was diligent, smart and studious since he was a child. He hired teachers to study hard in the "Thatched Cottage School" built by his family. At that time, warlords were separatist and banditry was rampant in various parts of eastern Henan. His father established a team to protect the village and hired martial artists to teach him martial arts. Later, he was good at martial arts and killed the bandits who came to rob him, which made him famous.
One day, Shanwu went to the county town to go to the market, and met a brother and sister performing at the Flower Theater. They were blackmailed and bullied by the gangster Guan Hu, and he sacrificed his life to save them and rectify the gangster. It was later learned that the father of the two brothers and sisters was a boxer who was proficient in "Yanqing Boxing". After the family suffered a disaster, he wandered around and became ill, so he took him to his home to recuperate and became his teacher. Later, Shanwu, his brother, sister and his buddies became life-and-death friends, working together in farming and armed business. Later, relying on the support of Bozhou City Defense Commander Sun Maoxing, he formed a joint defense team and became famous for killing bandits and bullies.
At that time, his grandfather was critically ill. Shanwu returned to Shangqiu with his mother for the funeral.
