The thirteenth quarter of midnight, in my opinion, is a very delicate time. It is about the moment behind human nature, a moment that is obscured by inertia in ordinary life. Hawking said in "A Brief History of Time" that when the universe expands infinitely, what we are exposed to is a world that shrinks infinitely. I often wonder whether at a moment, we can see a scene beyond ordinary people's understanding.
So, I think the so-called "suspense" is exactly the same: the reason why suspense is fascinating lies in its suspense and the evil behind human nature. It is beyond life and parasitic on life. It doesn't require too much violence and bloody scenes, it just has a story and ending that makes people unable to stay away and unimaginable.
To achieve this is already a complete merit. Hitchcock's American suspense is "can only be imitated but cannot be surpassed." And I am bold enough to write my own favorite short suspense stories here. Feel free to comment, but please don't make personal attacks. Thanks
