"Zionismus/Zionism" is named after "Zion/Mount Zion".
Mount Zion is a mountain south of the Old City of Jerusalem. The Jews built two temples here. The first temple (Solomon's Temple) was destroyed by the Babylonians in 556 BC, and the rebuilt Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.
For two thousand years, Jews scattered around the world have never stopped mourning the destruction of the Temple and hoping to return to their homeland and rebuild the Temple. For two thousand years, the Jews have never stopped praying for a return to their homeland of Zion, and some have even set out on a journey to their homeland and holy land.
Purpose: Zionism/Zionism refers to a nationalist movement in which Jews return to their homeland of Zion and rebuild their homeland here. Only very few nationalist movements can so fundamentally change the course of a nation's history as the Zionist movement.
