In 239 BC, Ying Zheng, the young king of the Qin State, faced three threats: Prince Chengjiao raised an army to rebel and the princes separated themselves; the government was controlled by Prime Minister Lu Buwei and his mother Zhao Ji, making the monarch a figurehead; and noble relatives of the Ying family interfered with the government, so centralization of power was imperative. After Ying Zheng experienced the tragic loss of his loved one and the coup in the Qinian Palace, he grew from a frightening puppet monarch to a great emperor who was thirsty for talents and vigorously reformed. After deposing his prime minister Lu Buwei, he recruited young talents and opened up the country of Zheng. Qu, abolished the "Expulsion Order", integrated Han Fei's works, and brought Legalist thought to its peak. Then he adopted Wei Liao's suggestions to conquer the six countries, unify the Central Plains, attack the Xiongnu in the north, and conquer Baiyue in the south, pushing the great Qin Dynasty to its peak. The rise of the Qin Dynasty made Ying Zheng's childhood friend Prince Yan Prince Ji Dan jealous and fearful. He sent Jing Ke to assassinate Qin but failed. Qin and Yan fought. Ji Dan retreated to Jicheng and committed suicide in despair. All the Yan people who defended Jicheng fought against Qin and no one survived. During Ying Zheng's decades in power, the five concubines developed feelings for him, including each other, cherishing each other, knowing each other, and longing for each other. However, because he persisted in adhering to his friendship with his first love, Afang, and only loved one person in his life, he let down the deep love of the women and trapped himself in the desert of his soul. At the peak of his power, he also has to face family, friendship, and love demands but not success.
The eldest princess Ying Yinman, as the daughter who most resembles Ying Zheng, is deeply loved by Ying Zheng, and she and the musician Gao Jianli are in love with each other and promise each other for life. Ying Yinman, who is nearly 20 years old, is eventually advised by the ministers to be sent as a marriage chess piece to the general Wang Jian who is over 50 years old.
