Su Lianshu, who lost his father in the third grade of junior high school, and Lin Yunying, who was born into a scholarly family but was unwilling to devote his life to literature, had known each other since childhood. Su Lianshu also regarded Lin Yunying as an older brother. Su Lianshu, who was about to take the high school entrance examination but whose father died of illness, had no intention of studying. Lin Yunying used her tenderness to influence him little by little. Su Lianshu, a freshman in high school, lost contact with Lin Yunying because of family bans, but finally softened her heart because of Lin Yunying's words before transferring to another school. Only then did Lin Yunying clarify that transferring was just a pretense and that she would stay in school to study. The night before Lin Yunying's college entrance examination, Su Lianshu and Lin Yunying formally established their relationship, and eventually both were admitted to Tsinghua University.
