Fang Nuan was born in 1923. He had four older brothers and was considered the most favored one in the family. But not long after, the three northeastern provinces fell rapidly, and the second brother disappeared. Fang Nuan accompanied his parents to Nanjing to visit relatives. At a banquet, Fang Nuan married Mei Jiuye, the flower of Nanjing.
