What happens when a hero ages?
When he can no longer hold his sword, when he is no longer young, when he has succumbed to fate?
There will be another young man who will take over his sword, use it to cut through the night, split fate, and take over his title of hero.
Veterans and new recruits pass on the fire from generation to generation.
A young leader who doesn't want to be a storyteller is not a good hero. A missionary who doesn't want to be a hunter is not a good inventor.
