Whoever wants to be the protagonist doesn't want to be the protagonist. If you want to be the protagonist, don't be.
The protagonist lost his father at the age of seven and his mother at the age of eight. He started practicing Buddhism at the age of nine because of a family heirloom jade pendant. He entered the sect at the age of ten. He was bullied by a disciple of the same sect at the age of eleven and almost died. Later, he met a demon cultivator, and from then on he reached the pinnacle of his life, married Bai Fumei, and conquered the whole world.
The reader becomes the "protagonist", however! Life is happy, parents live long and healthy, and no accidents happen.
Therefore, the protagonist is not someone who can be the protagonist. You can be the protagonist if you want to, even if you are the protagonist.
