Ted Chiang wrote an article called "The Story of Your Life". In the book, a linguist accidentally mastered a language and became familiar with the past and the future. She knew the outcome of everything but was unable to change it. She could only watch all these things that she had known happen one by one. Su Tang didn't want this. She didn't want to master this kind of language that was not controlled by the time dimension. She wanted the air to pass through the ever-changing shape of the mouth and form a string of sound waves with a beginning and an end through the vibration of the vocal cords.
What she wants is that even if the future is ever-changing, she can still turn the tide. Predicting the future itself is a kind of cheating.
