It may be a story of two people. In the battle of Kuaiji in 494 BC, several people from Yue were killed. King Gou Jian of Yue retreated to Kuaiji with 5,000 remnants of his troops. Externally, he showed weakness and sued for peace with Wu. Internally, he adopted the strategy of gathering together in ten years and enriching the country and strengthening the army. Xishi, a woman by the Huansha River, went to Wu alone, seeking a chance to survive and hoping that he would be able to live up to his hard work. The carriage carried her farther and farther away. Gou Jian looked around and saw endless smoke and clouds in the north, and long rivers flowing eastward!
