This work tells the story of the tragic and joyful life choices of characters such as Li Mantang, the owner of a carriage shop in Fengjin County, northern Shandong Province, and his three sons Dadan, Erdan, Goudan, and Putai County security chief Wang Xuefeng, and Li Mantang's third brother Li Mantun during the Anti-Japanese War. It historically introduces the true process of Shandong warlord Han Fuju's defeat in resisting the Japanese invaders. It objectively shows the process of He Siyuan, the former Shandong Lubei Administrative Director (later Shandong Province Governor and former Peking Mayor); and Liu Jingwu (real name Liu Jingliang), the Administrative Inspector and Security Commander of Northern Shandong, resisting the Japanese aggressors and expelling the Communist Party. One of the main characters in the work, Wang Xuefeng (real name Wang Xueting), the former head of the Po Tai Security Group, experienced both the struggle against Japan and the expelling of communism, and through a series of tortuous, complex, and repeated internal conflicts, he finally resolutely chose to join the Eighth Route Army. Through many sad and tearful true stories, the novel reproduces the arduous, unyielding and ups and downs process of the people of Shandong during the Anti-Japanese War, especially the people in northern Shandong and Jinan, who reclaimed wasteland, fought bandits, and bravely resisted the Japanese invading and stubborn troops.
