Ten years is enough to erase too many things, and emotions or thoughts may change with the passage of time. Perhaps as early as when he decided to let the self from ten years ago face the horrific war on his behalf, he had already realized that he was completely different from the person he once was.

The 'Law' cannot be touched or ignored, it is the truth beneath the earth.
