When I was a human child, they were essential characters in my nightly stories.
Whenever the elder in the family sits on the bench and opens the old, worn thick book with the cover already worn off, I will always be the first to sit next to him.
At that time, like all other children, I thought of them as characters in ancient stories. They were different in each story, but they were so similar:
——They are the God of Death, the messengers of the Six Paths of Styx.
——They have no names, but their books record the names of every dead and dying person;
——They write the sinners in the book of hell and the good people in the register of heaven.
But as time passed, when I sold my soul to the devil and sacrificed eternal daylight to gain eternal life, I truly understood:
——The God of Death is not only the title of the messenger of reincarnation, but also the name of those who survive in the gap between life and death.
——They have eternal life, but they can only wander between life and death.
——They have no past and no future, but they have the loneliness of eternal years.
