Empress Dowager Zhaoxian was born in the Yin family of Yuzhou in the Jin Dynasty. She was the minister of Honglu Temple and a lecturer at the Hanlin Academy, and the daughter of Yin Shen, the first-class Duke. When Taizong lived in the East Palace, she was Liangdi. Taizong ascended the throne and conferred her as a noblewoman. She was promoted to a virtuous concubine and raised Taizong's seventh son Hui (later Chengzu of Jin Dynasty). Chengzu ascended the throne and respected his mother as the empress dowager. Chengzu, Xiaozong, Renzong, and Wuzong added posthumous titles to her. The full posthumous title is: Zhaoxian Xuanyi Gongsu Duankechang Shengcheng Empress. Historically known as Queen Zhaoxian or Queen Mother Zhaoxian.
