Personally, I feel that good fan fiction satisfies three things: 1. The characters do not collapse; 2. The background settings are innovative and the articles are well-entangled. Even if there is no sense of substitution, at least there is the idea that "this may indeed happen in a parallel world." I personally don't like omnipotent heroines, I prefer stories that are more bland and real, or where you can actually see the protagonist progress through her own efforts. 3. Good writing style. It's probably the kind of admiration you feel when you read a certain sentence and feel suddenly shocked, "Oh, it can still be like this!"
