The first wife of Lu You, a poet in the Southern Song Dynasty, was Tang Wan, the daughter of his uncle Tang Zhongjun.
The Lu family once used a family phoenix hairpin as a token to get engaged to the Tang family. After three years of marriage, Tang Wan's talent and close relationship with Lu You aroused dissatisfaction with Lu's mother. Later, Lu's mother thought that Tang Wan had delayed her son's future, so she ordered Lu You to divorce Tang Wan.
Before leaving, Tang Wan gave Lu You a pot of begonia, saying that it was called Heartbroken Red, and Lu You called it "Acacia Red". The name means the longing for each other that cannot be seen. Lu's mother ordered Lu You to marry a docile daughter of the Wang family. Tang Wan married Zhao Shicheng, a scholar from the same county and a descendant of the royal family, at the discretion of her family.
Su Shi once said that life and death are uncertain in ten years, and you will never forget them if you don't think about them.
For ten years, Lu You and Tang Wan did not say goodbye, but they separated.
Many years later, Lu You went to visit Shen Garden and met Tang Wan and his wife. Both parties talked about their separation, knowing that their fate in this life was over and there would be no chance of getting back together. Tang Wan personally toasted a glass of wine to Lu You. After Lu You drank, he inscribed the poem "The Hairpin-headed Phoenix" in Shen Garden.
The following year, Tang Wan inscribed the hairpin head phoenix. Afterwards, the fragrance disappeared and the jade died, and he died in depression.
