The protagonist, Zhong Yi, was a native of Chu in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was the earliest guqin player recorded in history books and had been a court qin master for generations. When Chu and Zheng were at war in the Spring and Autumn Period, Zhongyi of the Chu State was captured by the Zheng State and dedicated to the Jin State.
The protagonist Ji Qi does not exist in history. She was created by the author and her identity is the prince of Jin Dynasty.
