I have been able to see things that ordinary people cannot see since I was a child. To be precise, it's not just me, but the women in my family - my grandmother, my mother, my sister - all the direct women in the maternal clan can see that. To be more precise, I could only clearly see them in my grandfather's house - those who had passed away wrapped in the hazy white light - elsewhere I could probably only see some hazy outlines or a thick white mist.
At that time, I didn't know that my mother's family was unusual. I naively thought that everyone could see those spiritual creatures and that worshiping ancestors was just a matter of everyone gathering to listen to the deceased elders in the family telling their stories.
I still remember that look, which was mixed with contempt and disgust and other things I didn't know, but there was no warmth at all.
It took me many years to understand that people are always curious and yearning when they hear about things they are unfamiliar with or people different from themselves, but when that thing or person actually appears in front of them, they instinctively hate and reject it. It's nothing to be sad about, it's just instinct.
