In October 1911, after the news of the outbreak of the Wuchang Uprising reached Tibet, the Ge Laohui organization in the Tibetan and Sichuan troops responded actively, and its subordinates also killed the co-president Luo Changqi. Chen Quzhen was a member of the alliance and was well aware of the critical situation, so he mobilized 99 officers and soldiers from Hunan and Guizhou to take the Qiangtang grassland, cross the Tanggula Mountains and enter Qinghai to return to the inland. However, they went astray and got lost in the desert, starved of food and blood, and wandered for more than seven months until June of the first year of the Republic of China (1912). Tibetan girl Xiyuan followed Chen Quzhen out of the desert, but unfortunately died of illness in Chang'an.
