Synopsis
When I first listened to Chung Han-liang's "Scent of Hometown", when the Cantonese phrase "Moonlight shines on the earth" came into my ears, I suddenly felt an indescribable tenderness and tranquility in my heart. The thick sadness and longing are indescribable. The soothing melody and poetic lyrics are inexplicably captured by it. There is no room for resistance, no resistance, and I am deeply involved in it. It is a gentle mess. It was such a gentle song, using the most familiar language, the most childlike charm, and the simplest tune, that made me burst into tears in the darkness. So I played this song on repeat for a whole day. Later, I went to listen to "Moonlight", and suddenly I remembered many nights, listening to the sound of termites knocking on the screen on the big wooden bed in my hometown, with the anxiety of a power outage in midsummer, the fragrance of dry grass, and the shadow of the trees outside the window. That's what I once had but have lost. Later, I watched the movie "Night Rose" starring Zhong Hanliang, based on the novel of the same name by ruffian Cai. Ke Zhihong and Ye Meigui met by chance, got to know each other, and finally stayed together. The feelings spreading in the dark night are just because of one person, giving you a familiar feeling and warmth. Until then, I didn't know that my sadness and longing only came from a familiarity. A throbbing longing for an encounter with familiar gentleness. My joy and emotion are just derived from this simple story and this simple song itself, without any worship or blindness. That is something I have never owned, but have always fantasized about. I fantasize that maybe one day, there will be a man with a story, and I will stage a joyful show under the same roof. So, I started writing this story. As in "Night Rose," it starts simply: renting a house. I didn't think about the whole plot, nor the characters, and I didn't even know why I wanted to write the male protagonist as a Hong Konger: I don't understand Hong Kong or Cantonese at all. This is the first time that I have seriously tried to write a modern story. It may not be good, or there may be traces of imitation (I think the fact that the male and female protagonists know each other while renting a house should only be considered imitation). However, I just want to write a kind of warmth and nostalgia. The simplicity, simplicity and warmth we had in childhood will be found again in this city. I know that we all have such a song hidden in our hearts, and such a person, with the slightest touch, will cause thousands of ripples. Because my heart longs for a tender song. Wandering through the night, dissipating in the daylight.
